The Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56 mile long preserved section of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. Stretching from Ocracoke Inlet in the northeast all the way to Beaufort Inlet on the southeast end, the Cape Lookout National Seashore spreads across four main islands and contains some of the most scenic beauty in all of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast.
Undeveloped areas such as North Core Banks, South Core Banks, Shackleford Banks and
Harkers Island provide endless breathtaking views and plenty of outdoor recreation,
hidden away from all of the stresses of everyday life. Two small villages thrive in this area, and both are historic fishing communities where residents have lived for several centuries, maintaining their unique way of life. Access to the Cape Lookout National Seashore is limited and only accessible by boat or ferry. The Harkers Island Visitors Center typically keeps a schedule of marinas that provide ferry service to the island to help visitors plan around the times. Those that like to canoe and kayak can also put in at the public park near the eastern region of
Harkers Island and make their way through the channels of this beautiful, unspoiled paradise. Those that are trying to maneuver their own way however should be careful as North Core and South Core sounds are sometimes hard to navigate through.
The Cape Lookout National Seashore contains several landmarks that visitors typically adventure to. Portsmouth Village Historic District, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the many undeveloped beach shores attract numerous people every year either for vacations or fun day trips. Once you are in the area, getting around can also be quite tricky. Most visitors rent boats and
ATV’s to explore in between the islands and find good fishing, shelling and sunbathing spots. If you are in the region, you simply must take some time out to explore Shackleford Banks, the infamous island that is home to a wild herd of horses that are said to have descended from the Spanish mustangs that made their way to the island after a period of shipwrecks and colonization.
